Ascent of the Thunder Dragon is a captivating spiritual biography and partial memoir that moves seamlessly between the seventeenth and twenty-first centuries.

It traces the formation of Bhutan through the extraordinary life of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal—a visionary Buddhist leader and highly realised spiritual master—who unified the country’s once-fragmented valleys into a cohesive nation. Sasha Wakefield vividly brings to life his achievements, from establishing political authority to shaping Bhutan’s spiritual and cultural vibrancy, which continues to define the nation today.

Blending meticulous historical research with personal reflection, Wakefield immerses readers in Bhutan’s majestic landscapes, sacred monasteries, and enduring traditions. The narrative captures both the immense challenges Zhabdrung faced and the visionary leadership that enabled him to create a nation grounded in devotion, resilience, and unity. Interwoven with these historical accounts are Wakefield’s own experiences in Bhutan, providing a memoir-like perspective that offers a lived sense of how the past continues to influence present-day experience. Through her eyes, readers witness the profound beauty of Bhutan’s high valleys, dense pine forests, and rushing rivers, as well as the rhythms of daily monastic life, rituals, and festivals that have endured for centuries.

The seventeenth century was a pivotal time for the tiny but culturally vibrant kingdom of Bhutan— marked especially by the life of the influential political and spiritual leader Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal (1594–1651), including his remarkable past lives. Sasha Wakefield traces the life and profound spiritual accomplishment of this master in the context of her own spiritual journey from Australia to Bhutan.

Wakefield also introduces readers to essential Buddhist concepts—reincarnation, karma, bodhisattvas, buddhas, and enlightenment—explaining them in a clear and accessible way. This allows newcomers to grasp the spiritual context of Zhabdrung’s life while deepening understanding of his enduring significance. The book highlights how his leadership was informed not only by political necessity but by a profound spiritual vision, one that integrated faith with practical governance to safeguard Bhutan’s heritage and preserve the country’s independence amidst regional pressures.

More than a historical account, Ascent of the Thunder Dragon is a journey into the heart of Bhutanese identity, spirituality, and culture. Wakefield provides a nuanced portrait of Zhabdrung as both a historical figure and a deeply spiritual presence, illuminating the ways in which his influence continues to resonate in the country’s people, landscapes, and rituals. Richly detailed and evocative, the narrative allows readers to experience Bhutan’s founding in an intimate, immersive way, bridging past and present.

Ideal for travellers, history enthusiasts, spiritual seekers, and readers of biography, the book combines the grandeur of Bhutan’s history with the intimacy of personal experience.

Wakefield’s storytelling brings both the human and the transcendent dimensions of Zhabdrung’s life into sharp focus, creating a work that is informative, inspiring, and deeply engaging.

About The Author

Gary Lonesborough.png

Mother, wife, spiritual seeker, former investment banker—and now author, Sasha Wakefield was born to immigrant parents and raised in the beachside suburb of Bronte, Sydney, where she enjoyed an idyllic childhood. At the age of ten, she began questioning the meaning of life, setting her on a lifelong search through various spiritual traditions and a yearning for a teacher.

Although drawn to a spiritual path early on, she pursued a conventional career, completing bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics, finance, and international development. She then became an investment banker, working for over a decade as a derivative strategist. Eventually, the call to follow the spiritual path became too strong to ignore, and she left the corporate world behind.

A chance visit to Bhutan in 2006 set in motion a series of serendipitous encounters that led her to the teacher she had long been seeking. For the past nineteen years, she has divided her time between Bhutan and Australia, deepening her spiritual practice under the guidance of one of Bhutan’s most revered lamas—the reincarnation of the sixty-second Je Khenpo and former Tsugla Lopen of the Central Monastic Body.

Committed to serving Bhutan and supporting the preservation of its spiritual and cultural heritage, Sasha brings this unique perspective to her writing, sharing the country’s rich history, sacred landscapes, and enduring traditions with readers around the world.
